CASE
STUDY
A. Architectural Issues as
discussion were as follows:
a.
General: Present
facility functions for 15 employees and 45 volunteers. Presently the
Girls
Scouts use the facility
occasionally as well. (4) years ago this facility had 750 calls; last
year they
had 1100.
b. Present rear addition
functioning as an “overnight sleep room” (bunk space) has no security –
(separation of men & women).
Rear door alarm was added for security purposes. No intercom
connection between Radio room at
first floor near front entrance or “Bunk Rooms” - no
communication - presently one
must walk up to sleeping rooms to communicate emergency
situations. Need cable
(communications).Feels there is a need for a 2nd “overnight sleep room”
(bunk
space), possibly in the location of the existing Office Space. This
space shall become more
important and used.
Present “overnight sleep room”
(bunk space), has no heat.
c. Would like to see -
New Training Room with
sliding (or folding partition doors); allowing overall
space to be “sud-divided” for
numerous events happening simultaneously. This space would also
function for the memberships
Board / committee meetings. Present space is “too small” - needs to
be
larger and more “State of the Art”.
d. Provide separate space for
“Day Person” could be in a separate “cubicle” created from a
common space.
e. Provide (2) Offices - (8)
individuals would be using these offices @ the same time.
1. Operational Space - (1)
computer terminal
2. Administrative Space - (1)
computer terminal; secure area,
3. Carrier/Personnel
-(Human Resources) Space -(1) computer terminal
f. Provide
a “Common Space” - to
“house” offices as noted above; and offer space for additional
desk areas. (Presently 13
individuals use this space).
1. Treasurer /Secretary Space -
(2) desks and computer terminals. Secure
area,
2. President’s Space - (1) desk
and computer terminal. Secure area,
3. Day Person Space - (1)
desk and computer terminal. Secure area,
4. Small conference room.
These space / function
requirements, could be met by the existing training
area - with some sub-division.
g. Present kitchen size and
function is adequate.
h.
Present “Decon” / Storage Area
- could become new Dayroom.
New Decon Area
- needs fresh air; door to exterior. Present dayroom - could expand into
present
storage area. Provide shower /
bathroom.
i. Need
more bathrooms; - serving both Public and Private uses.
j.
It was agreed that there needed to be separation of the Public and
Private uses - presently there is
some overlap of this.
k. Present Mechanical Room
could serve as a bathroom.
l.
Aesthetics - gray - white -
maybe a peak (Gabel Roof).
m.
Washer / Dryer - possibly
move to existing Ambulance bay area - or “Decon”.
n. (4)
New Ambulance Bays -
Addition to the present buildings South-East side. Shall allow for
“Pass-thru” to occur. Shall be
designed for (4) “full-size ambulances - (2) “Quick Response”
Cars. Provide lockers for
individuals working on ambulances /response vehicles. Approx. 35-40
required. Provide floor drains -
for equipment (vehicle) washing. (4). May want to do a “Car
Wash” as a fundraiser.
o.
Storage - Provide for. Also
presently have storage sheds on site - these will have to be either
relocated or replaced. Maybe an
outdoor pavilion.
p.
Emergency “Back-up” Generator
- provide for.
- May consider in new redesign
and addition - allowance for future second floor expansion.
- Potential future use of
new facility for the County Training Center.
B. Landscape / Planning / Site
Issues as dicussioned were as follows:
a.
Present front paved area
- would like this to be
converted into “Green Space” - possible
landscaping. - “Dress up” front
building appearance - Buffer Area.
b. Parking:
12 -50 cars. paved area; Parking
at rear of building - possibly coming in off the North
side of property - through
Luther Forest Area. Existing Paved Parking 12 spaces, 5 are priority for
emergency calls. Anticipate the
need for 30 spaces max. (with potential for overflow). Septic / Well
-
Steve mentioned that he would like to retain the existing well as a
“back-up” - while tieing into the
Town
water at the street. May possibly need hook-up for vehicle washing /
disposal.
Kathy has
since confirmed that the well
point is presently located in the Utility Room.
d.
Access : Create a
more defined ingress/egress from Route 9 with provisions for emergency
egress onto Route 9. Investigate
potential for secondary access from Playground Village.
e. Outdoor
Use: Expand/Improve
outdoor space to include:
Sitting/Patio Area. Outdoor
Pavilion with provisions for water and power
Re-designed entry for easy, well-defined access into the building.
f.
Infrastructure:
Investigate water usage projections
Make recommendations for water
alternatives
Hook up to town / Luther Forest
water supply
Add a new point or well.
Discussed truck washing and need for internal drain system. Investigate
septic system needs, appears to
be adequate for projected use.
g.
Aesthetics: Provide more
green space along Route 9 to help define entrance into the site.
Enhance signage to include
flags, planting, etc.
